GPSC asks for transparency from UA administration, proposes separate vote for student fees

Graduate student representatives are requesting that the UA administration be more transparent when making decisions regarding tuition and fees.

The Graduate and Professional Student Council passed a tuition and fee memorandum of understanding with no opposition Tuesday evening.

“We think the memorandum of understanding that the Graduate and Professional Student Council will sign with the administration is the best document that any Graduate and Professional Student Council can sign,” said GPSC president, Zachary Brooks. “And we think it is not just good for the 8,633 graduate and professional students at the University of Arizona, we think it is good for every single student at the University of Arizona, all 40,000 students.”

The UA administration, upon signing the memo, would be agreeing to go to GPSC to discuss any tuition and fee proposals in the future. The council said it hopes to have a signing ceremony with the administration in four weeks.

Jasmine Sears, the representative for the College of Optical Sciences, spoke at the meeting about creating a petition within the college against the recently passed Arizona Student Media fee and the Wildcat Events Board fee that were passed in the most recent ASUA elections.

The goal is for graduate students and professional students to vote on this issue separately from undergraduate students, Sears said.

Sears said unlike undergraduate students, graduate students don’t benefit from the fees as much.

“It turns out that there are a lot more undergraduates at the University of Arizona than there are grad students or professional students and sometimes there are things that benefit undergraduates more,” Sears said. “It seems strange to force us to pay a fee that supports it [the fees] when we aren’t really getting the same benefit out of it.”
