Although the Arizona women’s golf team shot even par yesterday in the second round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, it still managed to climb the leaderboard.

The Wildcats jumped up one slot to second place at 1-under, but at one point they were 5-under and had a three-stroke lead.

“”We played OK (in the round),”” said UA head coach Shelly Haywood. “”We gave a lot of shots away.””

Freshman Alejandra Llaneza put herself in better position to record her first collegiate victory. She shot a 2-under 70 and sits in second place individually at 5-under.

Senior Alison Walshe had the best round of the day for Arizona, and the best round of anyone in the tournament on day two. She shot 3-under to climb from 10th place to fourth.

“”Alison and Alejandra played really well,”” Haywood said.

Arizona is five stokes out of first place entering today’s final round, but Haywood is confident her team can take home its first win of the season.

“”Five shots is really easy to make up in college golf,”” she said. “”We need to play solid and play as good as we can play.””
