Golf prepares for tournaments

Arizona has another matchup this week against Oregon, but this time, it is in golf. The Arizona men’s and women’s golf teams will be playing in two different out-of-town tournaments this week with each of them facing off against the Ducks.

“It’s definitely challenging any time you go to a course that you’ve never seen before,” UA men’s golf head coach Jim Anderson said in a press release. “Luckily, for this event, no other teams have seen it either.”

The men’s team will play 54 holes over two days against a total of 11 teams. Four of those teams are Pac-12 Conference schools, including No. 7 Stanford, No. 8 Washington, No. 24 USC and No. 25 Oregon.

Freshman and Tucson native George Cunningham will play this week in the No. 1 spot for the men at the Nike Collegiate Invitational. He leads the team with an average score of 72.83 per round.

Cunningham was the recipient of the 2014 Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Award and was ranked No. 2 in his recruiting class.

The men’s team started play on Monday at the Nike Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas, hosted by Texas Christian University at the famous Colonial Country Club. This will be the third tournament of the fall semester for the men’s team. This will also be the first time the team will be playing at Old Colonial Country Club.

Through Monday’s play, the Arizona men’s team is dead last in the team leaderboards at 44-over-par and has considerable ground to make up, as the Wildcats are 36 shots behind  Oregon. Cunningham finished the first day 10-over-par, tied for 38th place amongst all participants.

During the men’s last tournament at the 60th Annual  William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by the University of New Mexico, the team finished in 11th place with a total combined score of 41-over-par 905.

The women’s team will be playing at the Windy City Collegiate Classic in Wilmette, Ill., hosted by Northwestern University at the historic Westmoreland Country Club. This will be the second tournament of the semester for the women’s team.

The women will play a total of 48 holes over two days against 14 teams. Two of those schools are from the Pac-12: Oregon and USC.

UA Junior Lindsey Weaver is the defending individual winner at the 2013 Windy City Collegiate Classic. Weaver shot a total score of 5-under-par 208.

Through Monday’s play, the Arizona women’s team is in better shape than the men’s. The women are sixth overall behind an 18-over-par performance. USC leads at 5-over-par and is the only Pac-12 school higher than Arizona.

After the first day, Weaver holds sole possession of 25th place with a score of 5-over-par, while UA senior Manon Gidali is tied for sixth place with an even score.

Last week, the women’s team was the runner up at the Annika Intercollegiate in Orlando, Fla. The team finished with a total combined score of 3-under-par 861. The team beat out other Pac-12 women’s golf teams such as ASU, Stanford, UCLA and USC.

Both teams will have live scoring online for this week’s tournaments. The men’s results can be found at and the women’s results can be found at
