Arizona pitcher Taryne Mowatt has been named the Pacific 10 Conference Pitcher of the Week after compiling an impressive 4-1 record and striking out 46 batters this past weekend at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.
“”I’m pretty excited about it because it means that I had a successful weekend, especially with all the other great pitchers in our league,”” Mowatt said. “”The main thing I like about it is that it shows I’ve grown since the first weekend this season – which was awful – to now.””
Mowatt held opponents to a .159 batting average and had an ERA of 1.17 against some of the best teams in the country.
She led the Wildcats to wins over No. 6 Michigan, No. 15 Louisiana-Lafayette, North Carolina State and Pacific, with her only loss coming against eventual tournament champion No. 3 Oklahoma.
“”We played some top teams this past weekend, and our team had to put up the runs and play defense behind me to get the wins,”” Mowatt said. “”So I think the games that we won this weekend we did so collectively, it wasn’t just one person.””
It is the fourth time in her career that Mowatt has been named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week and first time this season.
Mowatt is 15-6 this year and has struck out 217 batters in 134 2/3 innings.
