No. 15 Arizona baseball traveled to Frisco, Texas on Friday and defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks 3-0. With the win, Arizona keeps its perfect start intact as the Wildcats are now 8-0 on the season.
The Wildcats three runs is their lowest output of the season and marked the first time Arizona has not topped six runs this season.
Senior J.C. Cloney got the start for Arizona and pitched 7.2 shutout innings while allowing only three hits and striking out seven. With the win, Cloney improved to 3-0 on the season for Arizona. Cloney extends his streak of consecutive innings without an earned run to 38, with that streak dating back to last year’s College World Series.
Arizona and Arkansas battled to a stalemate for over half the game until Arizona broke the tie in the fifth inning. A Jared Oliva double scored Nick Quintana to give Arizona a 1-0 lead, and Cloney had the run support he needed.
The Wildcats would increase their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth as a J.J. Matievic double scored Alphonso Rivas.
In the eighth inning Mitchell Morimoto scored for Arizona while Rivas was caught out at second on a steal attempt extending the lead to 3-0.
Matijevic and Oliva led the Wildcats offense with one hit, one run batted in, and a double.
Cameron Ming relieved Cloney in the seventh inning and kept the shutout intact for Arizona. Ming earned his second save of the season and did not allow any hits or runs while striking out two batters in 1.1 innings.
On Saturday at 3 P.M. MST Arizona faces their first ranked opponent of the season against No. 22 Oklahoma State in Frisco.
