Arizona baseball infielder Dayton Dooney set to transfer

Caleb Villegas
Tucson Ariz.- Infielder, Dayton Dooney (8) hit a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the first inning on Saturday April 6, 2019. The cats hope to sweep the huskies on Sunday.

Arizona infielder Dayton Dooney is reportedly transferring out of Arizona, according to a report by D1Baseball.

Dooney was named as a Freshman All-American by several established platforms in 2019, hitting .323 with 10 home runs and 53 RBI in 48 games (including 40 starts). He struggled early on in this past year’s abbreviated season, hitting just .146 across 13 games.

Dooney was a true utilityman for the Wildcats, playing every infield position except for catcher. He also spent time as the Wildcats’ designated hitter .

Despite the loss of Dooney, along with the departures of Austin Wells and Matthew Dyer to the MLB, the Wildcats still come in at No. 12 in BaseballAmerica’s early top-25.

“Having Austin Wells depart was no surprise, whereas having Matthew Dyer drafted was more of one, but either way, Arizona’s offense will be extremely dangerous in 2021,” BaseballAmerica wrote. “The arrival of Daniel Susac should also help the Wildcats recover from having two catchers drafted. Their experienced pitching staff should also be improved and helped by the addition of four recruits ranked inside the BA 500.”
