The outcome of the race in the 2nd Congressional District between Republican Martha McSally and incumbent Democrat Ron Barber has been a long time coming.
McSally followed up the official election date of Nov. 4 by suing to prevent provisional ballots in Pima County from being counted five days later. Judge James Marner of Arizona Superior Court in Pima County denied the request.
Eighteen days later, Barber’s campaign, along with three voters, filed a lawsuit to have 133 ballots counted. U.S. District Judge Cindy Jorgenson denied the request.
As of Dec. 4, McSally was leading by 161 votes.
According to a press release by the Pima County Communications Office, the Pima County Elections Department has begun recounting votes since Dec. 4.
The official results are to be announced on Dec. 16, according to The Arizona Republic.
