Media arts student killed by car

A UA graduate student died late Monday night after being hit by a car while crossing East Speedway Boulevard at North Third Avenue, said Tucson Police Department officials yesterday.

Timothy Morris, a media arts graduate student, was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. Monday at University Medical Center, more than three hours after he was struck.

The driver of the car, Rudy Martinez, 52, was arrested on class 3 misdemeanor charges because he failed to yield the right of way to a pedestrian, said TPD spokesman Dallas Wilson.

Morris, 29, was a mile away from his home on East Helen Street.

Martinez, who was driving a 2005 Hyundai Elantra, was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Morris was a graduate teaching assistant in media arts seeking his master’s degree.

Officials from the media arts department declined to comment on the incident.
