While Arizona sophomore-to-be Lauren Young shined, the softball junior national team’s trip to Canada ended on a sour note.
On Sunday, Team USA was defeated in the gold medal game of the ISF Junior Women’s World Championships in Brampton, Ontario, Canada by Japan, 4-0, a team that the Americans beat 4-0 the day before. Team USA (8-1) had not given up any runs prior to the championship game and six of its wins were by the mercy rule.
Oregon sophomore Cheridan Hawkins gave up four runs in the top of the fifth inning and the game was called after six due to rain. USA softball tweeted a photo of the Americans trying to salvage the muddy field before the game was called.
Young hit .286, scored three runs, hit two home runs and tallied six RBI in nine games at third base for the Yanks. Young was second on the team in home runs.
Young hit a grand slam in the win over Puerto Rico (15-0) and a walk-off homer on the Fourth of July in the win against New Zealand (7-0).
Former Wildcat Guilmet called up to Majors
The Cleveland Indians called up former Arizona baseball pitcher Preston Guilmet to the Major Leagues, making him the 68th Wildcat to make it to the MLB.
In 34 games for the Columbus Clippers in Triple-A, Guilmet had a 2.32 ERA and 16 saves. The Indians picked him in the ninth round of the 2009 MLB Draft.
Guilmet was the 2007 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year and as a sophomore he was a first team All-American. He is second in Arizona history in strikeouts (419), which ranks fourth in the Pac-12 record book.
Guilmet was also one of four former Wildcats named to the Triple-A all-star game, which takes place July 17 in Reno, Nev.
Oklahoma City Red Hawk Jason Stoffel and Round Rock Express’ Cory Burns and Brad Mills all made the Pacific Coast League all-star team while Guilmet will play for the International League team.
Lalang sets personal record in Paris
Lawi Lalang ran a personal-best and new school record in the 1,500-meters at the Diamond League in Paris last week, placing him fifth overall.
Lalang, a junior in cross country and senior in track and field, ran a 3:33.20 — a World Championships “A” Standard at the Stade de France. He also set the previous school record in the 1,500 on April 29, 2012 at Stanford.
Volunteer assistant coach Bernard Lagat finished 13th in the 1,500 meters.
Former Wildcat Brigetta Barrett finished second in the high jump, clearing 6-6 (1.98m) and fellow alumna Georganne Moline finished third in the 400-meter hurdles.
Personnel moves
Arizona lost a tennis assistant coach but gained an associate athletic director.
ESPN college football insider Brett McMurphy reported that South Florida assistant athletic director for communications Jeremy Sharpe is leaving USF to become associate athletic director at Arizona.
Sharpe was assistant and associate media relations director at Texas before working at South Florida.
Arizona also announced that assistant men’s tennis coach Tom Lloyd was named the head coach of Loyola Marymount’s men’s team.
Lloyd was an assistant for seven years at the UA, and played for Arizona from 1999 to 2004. He was team captain for three seasons.
LMU went 4-20 last season.
Carey named to Maxwell watch list, Fischer to Bednarik
Despite off the field troubles, consensus All-American running back Ka’Deem Carey enters 2013 as one of 76 players named to the Maxwell Player of the Year Award watch list.
Last season Carey, as a sophomore, led the nation in rushing with 1,929 yards and broke the Arizona record with 23 rushing touchdowns on the season. While he didn’t crack the top 10 list for Heisman voting last season, Carey should earn some buzz entering 2013.
On the other side of the ball, senior Jake Fischer was one of 75 defenders on the Bednarik Award watch list. The Bednarik Award is given to the nation’s Defensive Player of the Year. Fischer led the Wildcats in tackles last season with 119 (76 solo and 43 assisted) and was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention.
