The last time Weber State visited the Tucson Convention Center, an all-out brawl occurred after the Arizona club hockey team swept their opponents in a two-game series.
The No. 12 Icecats (7-6) will remember last year’s physical series as Weber State (2-7-2) visits for another round of hard-mouth hockey tonight and tomorrow at 7:30 in the TCC.
“”Look what happened last year: the big brawl,”” said sophomore center Matt Conover. “”That’s a tough team. They’re usually on the bigger side. They don’t take much on the ice.””
The Icecats enter the weekend off a four-game losing streak and will look to turn things around after a disastrous series with Liberty two weeks ago, when they were dominated through both games.
“”These next four games are huge,”” Icecats head coach Leo Golembeiwski said of the Weber State series and next weekend’s contest against No. 9 ASU.
With junior co-captain and leading scorer Craig Irwin still sidelined with a shoulder injury, the rest of the offense will have to fill the gap, Golembiewski said.
He has emphasized that the defensive unit must step up if the Icecats are going to win.
The defense should have an added boost with the return of sophomore defensemen Kevin West, who had been sidelined since Oct. 22.
One of the Icecats’ top offensive threats, sophomore wing Robbie Nowinski, has been on a major slump, Golembiewski said, as he has had problems skating in the neutral zone and shooting the puck all season long.
“”Robbie Nowinski is a magician with the puck, but you gotta’ skate, and he’s not skating right now,”” Golembiewski said.
According to Golembiewski, Nowinski has yet to “”make his mark”” on the team this season.
Weber State has seen its share of problems this season as well. The visiting Wildcats come to the TCC unranked after finishing last season No. 6.
“”Weber State (is) gonna bring a lot to the table,”” Golembiewski said. “”These four games are very, very huge, and we need a step-up situation from (sophomore center) Cody (Morin), (Matt Conover) and Nowinski.””
