With one game remaining in the regular season, the Arizona women’s basketball team finally got what it had been looking for all season: a quality win.
Behind one of Arizona’s strongest offensive performances of the year, the Wildcats (10-18, 4-13) pulled off the upset in thrilling fashion to defeat USC (17-11, 10-7) 64-62, putting an end to a five-game skid.
“”I’m just proud of our team,”” said UA head coach Joan Bonvicini. “”This team is so resilient. Last weekend was a tough weekend from us, but today we were just so focused and were able to put it all together.””
Both teams struggled early as only seven points were scored in the first eight minutes of action.
While the Trojans soon found their form, Arizona remained cold, finishing the half with a dismal 28.1 percent shooting from the field.
Heading into the locker room, the Wildcats found themselves in a familiar place down eight.
But in the second half, Arizona’s offense awoke, as it attacked the Trojans with a 16-4 run.
USC did not go away as the two teams traded the lead until late in the half when Arizona had the ball with the chance to win.
With the game tied and six seconds remaining guard Tasha Dickey took a pass from forward Rheya Neabors and hit a jumper to seal the win for Arizona.
“”I was just thinking ‘Oh my gosh, please go in,'”” Dickey said. “”We were supposed to get the shot to either Rheya, Ashley (Whisonant) or Amina (Njonkou). But that fell through and I was just under the basket.
“”I’m just really glad it went in.””
