    Mogwai: a holy occasion

Myriad folks gathered to bow their heads and shoe-gaze for Mogwai at the Rialto last Wednesday: punks, pop kids, hipsters and age-appropriate appreciators. We were all present to have our auditory senses happily assaulted by the massive electric guitar static and thick bass chords that emitted sounds so low, it would have elephants and whales writhing to death – sacrifices to the rock gods.

Mogwai holds no attachment for lyrics. So what better way to start the night off than with “”Long Way?”” This piece begins with a squeaky little Scottish girl speaking, whom I couldn’t understand for the life of me.

Heavily laced with guitar riffs and initial bass, the song falls on your chest like a ton of bricks. It eerily ended with a pre-recorded Scottish man speaking over a phone, played backwards to make his unintelligible accent even less comprehensible.

All were sunk into the subdued state that washes over you during the Mogwai experience, but one girl felt the need to bring the excitement to the table that Mogwai was apparently not offering her. This svelte douche bag crawled onstage and threw herself onto a group of unsuspecting persons, possibly in hopes of crowd surfing. The only person who appreciated her desperation for attention was one fellow she fell on, who got some accidental boob action.

Distractions aside, the Fuck Buttons and Mogwai provided a night of stellar entertainment for this Wildcat, and I would recommend you have your eardrums invaded by them any time.
