The Arizona men’s golf team’s bid to rebound from a disappointing finish in its last tournament didn’t get off to the best start yesterday.

The Wildcats are eighth among 11 teams after day one of the CordeValle Collegiate after shooting 10 over on the par-72, 7,119-yard course in San Martin, Calif.

Arizona finished 17th of 18 teams at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., on Oct. 25.

The Wildcats’ top performance yesterday came from freshman Roberto Galleti, who finished the day tied for 17th with an even round.

In light of one standout performance, the team’s top two players struggled.

Senior Creighton Honeck finished in 48th place at 4 over, compiling seven bogies and three birdies. Freshman Tarquin McManus came in 62nd, shooting 8 over, with four bogies and two double-bogies.

“”Our top two performers didn’t play very well,”” said UA assistant coach John Knauer. “”But I did see some positives that we can build on.””

Knauer said the key to having a better second round today is improved play from MacManus and Honeck.

“”Tarquin’s not going to play that way two rounds in a row. Same with Honeck,”” he said. “”You can make up a lot of shots the way this tournament is set up six-count-five. If we have a good round, which we’re capable of, we can really move up.””

Under a six-count-five scoring format, only the best five rounds among a team’s six competitors count toward the group score.
