“Giffords still recovering, three other patients in good condition”

Of the four victims of Saturday’s shooting still admitted at UMC, three are now in good condition and the fourth, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, is continuing to make steady progress in her recovery, according to Dr. Peter Rhee, chief of trauma at University Medical Center.

Dr. Michael Lemole, chief of neurosurgery at the University of Arizona Department of Surgery, said that the spontaneous movements Giffords has been making such as opening her eyes, are becoming more common.

“”We can even think that she’s beginning to carry out more complex sequences of events, more complex sequences of activity,”” Lemole said. “”We’re very encouraged that she’s continuing to make all the right moves in the right direction.””

Two of Ron Barber’s daughters also made a statement about their father’s condition. Barber will be officially discharged today.

His daughters also read a statement on Barber’s behalf, in which he thanked all of Tucson for showing their support.

“”I also want to thank from the bottom of my heart, the people of Tucson who brought their words of encouragement to the front of the hospital,”” Barber wrote, referring to the memorial set up in front of UMC.

Rhee said this will be the last regular press conference UMC will hold, but they will release regular updates on the remaining patients.
