Day two of the Pac-12 softball tournament consisted of the four round one games throughout the day. No. 8 seed Arizona played No. 1 seed UCLA in the first round after winning the play-in game the night before against ASU. UCLA was coming into the matchup on a 23-game winning streak, as they had not lost a game since their trip to Eugene, Oregon, back on Friday, March 24.
Arizona again sent Devyn Netz out to the pitching circle to start the game. She faced UCLA’s ace pitcher Megan Faraimo who came into the game with a 28-2 pitching record.
Arizona, being the lower seed, got the pleasure of being the away team in their own stadium. UCLA took the field for the top of the first and made quick work of the Wildcat offense with a three-up, three-down inning. However, unlike their first inning offense, the Wildcat defense stood strong and did not allow any runs in the first inning.
The Wildcats came back up to the plate in the top of the second and got the offense going. In addition to getting a couple hits, Arizona was able to score a run. After another strong defensive stand, they did the same thing in the top of the third. The Wildcats entered the bottom of the third inning with a 2-0 lead.
The bottom of the third was where UCLA began their comeback. It all started with a 2-run home run from UCLA’s Maya Brady. The one hit tied the ball game until the fifth inning, when the Wildcats got back on top with a single run.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, UCLA hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fifth by Megan Grant and Brady.
Arizona struggled on offense after that and lost the game 4-3. With the loss, Arizona was eliminated from the tournament.
