No. 19 Arizona gymnastics falls to No. 5 Utah on Senior Night

The No. 19 Arizona gymnastics team honored eight senior gymnasts on Senior Night during its match against the No. 5 University of Utah on March 8 in McKale Center. Arizona fell short with a score of 195.725, while Utah posted a 197.875, recording its program’s highest score. Arizona recognized seniors Lara Burhans, Jessica Castles, Madison Courney, Elena Deets, Malia Hargrove, Caroline Herry, Bailey McCabe and Taylor Raskin.


The last matchup between these school’s happened on Feb. 1, 2016, and Arizona lost to Utah 194.850- 197.150. Arizona currently holds an eight-meet losing streak, winning zero meets throughout program’s history.


In their first rotation on vault, the GymCats posted a 49.150. The Wildcats recorded their program’s second-highest score on the event of the season. Utah scored a 49.350. Hargrove scored the highest for Arizona with a score of 9.925. Castles followed up with a 9.825. Alysen Fears also posted a 9.825. Abigayle Martin scored a 9.800 and Emma Strom earned 9.775. Ainsley Greever finished up the rotation with a 9.725.

Uneven bars:

In the second rotation on bars, the Wildcats earned a 47.950 while Utah posted a 49.525. Deets started the rotation with a 9.825. Fears posted a 9.800. Emily Mueller got a 8.775 and Hargrove acquired a 9.775. Rounding out the rotation, Sophie Derr scored a 9.350, and Martin scored a 9.200. Grace McCallum from Utah scored the highest in the event, earning a perfect 10.000.


Moving to beam for their third rotation, the Wildcats acquired a 49.250 and Utah scored a 49.425. Martin led the rotation with a score of 9.900. Mueller continued the rotation with a 9.875. Captain Deets posted a 9.850, while Fears got a 9.825 and Strom recorded a 9.800. Herry finished the rotation with a 9.775. Maile O’Keefe from Utah scored the highest on the beam event with a score of 9.975.


The GymCats finished their rotation with a 49.375 on the floor. Utah scored a 49.575. Strom and Mueller both posted 9.900s to keep Arizona’s floor average score high. Hargrove followed along with a 9.875. Herry, Deets and Fears all earned 9.850s. Jaylene Gilstrap and McCallum from Utah scored the highest on the event with scores of 9.950.

Beam – Abigayle Martin, 9.900

Next Meet:

The Wildcats will have their final home meet of the season against Southern Connecticut State University in McKale Center on Wednesday, March 13, at 6 p.m.
