The University of Arizona volleyball team (6-0, 0-0 in Big-12) went 3-0 on the road in Montgomery, Alabama this past weekend during the Alabama State Tournament.
Arizona met Alabama State University (3-0), Prairie View A&M University (3-0) and the University of Alabama (3-1).
Game 1: Thursday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m.
Alabama State University; 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-13)
The Wildcats’ first game was against Alabama State on Thursday, Sept. 5. Arizona beat Alabama State 3-0 and had the most resistance from the Hornets in the first set, winning 25-20. Eventually, the Wildcats tired out Alabama State, winning the next two sets (25-16, 25-13).
Jaelyn Hodge led Arizona with 12 kills and the team totaled a .443 hitting percentage compared to the Hornets’ .076.
Defensively, Haven Wray led the team with nine digs while setter Avery Scoggins put up 37 of the 46 total assists for the game.
Game 2: Friday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m.
Prairie View A&M; 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18)
Arizona’s next opponent in the tournament was Prairie View A&M. The teams played on Friday, Sept. 6 and the Wildcats won the match in the first three sets scoring 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.
Carlie Cisneros defended well for Arizona, leading the team with 14 digs. In the service game, the Wildcats stunned the Panthers, putting up 10 aces compared to the Panthers’ 3.
Arizona totaled 41 kills as Cisneros, Hodge and Kiari Robey had 8 apiece. Jordan Wilson led the team with 10 kills against the Panthers.
Game 3: Saturday, Sept. 7 at 9 a.m.
The University of Alabama; 3-1 (25-22, 27-25, 25-21, 25-21)
Arizona’s last opponent during the tournament was the University of Alabama on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Wildcats gave the Crimson Tide their first loss of the season, winning the match 3-1. The Wildcats won in four sets, only losing the second 27-25 in extra play.
Despite losing the second set, the Wildcats held the Crimson Tide to only a .088 hitting percentage. During the third set, Wilson gained consistent kills, totaling 16 kills for the game. Robey did the same, adding to Arizona’s 58 total kills.
Defensively, Robey led the Wildcats with five block assists. Arizona would take the fourth set 25-21 to win the game and sweep the Alabama State Tournament.
Looking ahead:
Arizona will stay on the road as the Wildcats head to Las Cruces, New Mexico, to compete in the New Mexico State Tournament starting on Friday, Sept. 13, in the Pan American Center.
Arizona’s matches will take place against Abilene Christian University on Friday, then the Wildcats will face Texas Southern University and will finish off the tournament on Saturday where they will take on New Mexico State University.
