The University of Arizona women’s soccer team claimed a dominant 5-1 victory over Kansas State University on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 11:30 a.m. for its last match at home in the regular season. The Wildcats are now 10-5-2 overall in the season and 5-4-1 in the Big 12.
The Wildcats started this match off strong after falling in their recent 4-0 loss to the University of Kansas. Just one minute into the game, Nicole Dallin scored a goal to put Arizona on the board first. Shortly after, Kansas State came back and evened out the score 1-1 eight minutes in. Arizona and Kansas State looked strong on both sides of the field. Megan Chelf dominated the field in the first half, laying one in to put the Wildcats ahead 2-1.
Aggressiveness from both programs caused multiple fouls to be called on each team. Chelf was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, receiving a yellow card. Arizona was awarded a penalty kick, which Gianna Christiansen kicked as it went in, extending the lead 3-1 going into halftime.
In the second half, Arizona continued to shut out Kansas State. During the 53rd minute mark, Freshman Narissa Fults scored a goal, helping Arizona increase the lead to 4-1. From there on out the Wildcats were in control of the match. Topping off the game, Maia Brown scored the last goal of the day, putting Arizona at 5-1.
Looking ahead
Arizona will be heading back on the road as the Wildcats take a short trip to Tempe to play ASU on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. This will be the last regular season match for the Wildcats before the Big 12 Soccer Championship in Kansas City, Mo. on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
