The University of Arizona women’s basketball team (14-9, 5-5 in Big 12) will be hitting the road to take on the University of Colorado Boulder Buffaloes (15-6, 6-4 in Big 12) on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in CU Events Center.
The Wildcats look to bounce-back into the win column after falling to the University of Utah on Jan. 31 in Salt Lake City, 67-58. Arizona struggled beyond the arc going 5-for-18 in 3-point attempts. It will be interesting to see the Wildcats perform as they continue their road swing against the Buffalos as Arizona is 5-3 in away games.
The Buffs are on a current three-game win streak, with notably two of them being at home.
History vs. Colorado
The Wildcats and Buffs have faced each other 30 times over the past 50 years, with their first-ever match dating back to Feb. 21, 1975, in Boulder, Colo. The Wildcats have a 10-20 record against the Buffaloes, with seven of the 10 wins occurring in the last decade.
Arizona had an 11-game losing streak against Boulder from 1989 to 2015. The last time the Wildcats faced the Buffaloes was on Jan. 5, 2024, in Tucson, where they came up just short, losing one point, 75-74. The Wildcats are 3-12 in away games against the Buffs.
Colorado players to watch
Jade Masogayo leads Boulder in scoring with 138 points in conference play, along with 54 rebounds and 15 blocks. She has no attempts from beyond the arc which means Arizona will need to protect inside the paint and force turnovers from her. Masogayo, 6-foot-3 junior forward, leads the Buffs in rebounds, averaging 4.7 boards per game alongside 12.3 points and 1.2 blocks.
Following close behind in scoring is graduate student Frida Formann with 113 points in conference play. She leads the team in 3-pointers (22), with 44.9% accuracy from 3-point range.
A Buffalo to keep an eye on defensively, is Colorado native Kindyll Wetta who leads the team in steals, collecting 16 in Big 12 matchups. Wetta also leads the team in assists, dishing out 5.6 per game. Notably, she has accumulated a staggering 45 total assists in conference play.
Wildcats to watch
Despite the Wildcats falling short to Utah on Jan. 31, Jada Williams put up a career-high performance with 25 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. She will be a key asset to Arizona going into the game against Colorado. Williams leads the Wildcats in scoring during conference play with 146 points so far. The sophomore guard also averages the most points for the team, contributing 13 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
Breya Cunningham has a team-high of 76 total rebounds in conference play so far, along with 21 steals and 18 blocks. With her defensive abilities, Cunningham will be able to capitalize on Colorado’s turnovers, which average 17.9 per game.
Cunningham has proved to be an all-around dominant player, scoring the second most points (102) scored in conference play, following Williams. Cunningham, a 6-foot-4 forward, leads the team in rebounding and is second in scoring, averaging 7.4 rebounds, 11.7 points and 1.8 blocks per game.
Other offensive powerhouses like Lauryn Swann, Isis Beh and Skylar Jones will need to produce as well in order to out-score the Buffaloes.
