The University of Arizona women’s tennis team (6-4) fell 4-0 against Texas Tech University (7-1) on their second-ranked match of the weekend at LaNelle Robison Tennis Center on Feb 16. Arizona’s loss against the Red Raiders was their only pointless game of the season so far.
The Red Raiders secured the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Arizona’s No. 28-ranked duo of Midori Castillo-Meza and Martyna Ostrzygalo fell 6-2 to Texas Tech’s No. 6-ranked pairing of Avelina Sayfetdinova and Mariia Hlahola. On court three, Texas Tech’s No. 83 Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif took down Arizona’s Zoya Chulak and Danielle Tuhten 6-4, giving Texas Tech the early 1-0 lead.
Heading into singles play, Arizona fought back, with Josie Usereau and Castillo-Meza both winning their first sets. However, they would go unfinished as the Red Raiders would get three straight two-set victories on courts six, four and three. Chulak would be the first out after falling 6-2, 6-2 to Texas Tech’s Sherif on court six. Junior Tanvi Narendran would fall next suffering 6-0, 6-3 on court four to Texas Tech’s Lila. Finally, Texas Tech secured victory after Kate Dmitrichenko beat Arizona’s Ostrzygalo 6-3, 6-4.
