The University of Arizona softball team (39-9, 14-7 Big 12) left New Mexico State University (22-24, 9-12 CUSA) scoreless in both games of Arizona’s final homestand of the season on Tuesday, April 22, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Game 1: Arizona 3 – NMSU 0
The earliest game of the day ended with a score of 3-0, which was the Wildcats’ first win of the day.
The third inning was the only time either team would score, as Tayler Biehl executed a perfect bunt, sending her to first. After the bunt, the Aggies would succumb to throwing errors, allowing Sydney Stewart, Jenna Sniffen and Biehl to score.
Saya Swain started for the Wildcats by pitching the first three innings with only a single hit.
Devyn Netz would relieve Swain and pitch the last four innings. Netz earned a win on the day, improving her record to 18-5. The two threw six strikeouts in total.
Game 2: Arizona 12 – NMSU 0 (5 innings)
The second game of the day was the most action-packed for the Wildcats as they completed 13 runs over NMSU, finishing the game in just five innings off a run-rule.
The first inning saw 3 runs completed by the Wildcats. Netz would send a runner home on a double, while Stewart would then send herself and Netz back on a home run past right center.
The second inning saw 2 runs brought in on a Sniffen home run. This marked the halfway point of the game, with Arizona up 5-0.
The third inning saw four runners come home. Another 2-run home run for Stewart, along with an Emily Schepp home run and a fielding error from the Aggies, put the Wildcats up 9-0.
Arizona finished its scoring by the end of the fourth inning, holding a dominant 13-0 lead over NMSU. Netz would score a 2-run home run, Stewart would hit yet another home run and a sacrifice fly from Schepp would be the end of scoring for the Wildcats.
In her three at-bats, Stewart would score in every one of them. Both Netz and Schepp managed to get a hit every time they stepped up to the plate. The team had a total of fifteen hits by the end of the game.
At the end of the day, superstar pitcher Netz was honored by former UCLA softball player and olympian, Natasha Watley, with a golden ticket invitation to the Athletes Unlimited Softball League Draft. This guarantees she will be selected to play on one of four teams within the league.
