MARANA - A new Krispy Kreme opened early Tuesday morning to nearly 80 Southern Arizonans eager to get their hands sticky. They showed up in hopes of winning a grand prize of a dozen doughnuts every day for a year.

The Marana store saw a line forming around 2 a.m. with people maintaining high spirits throughout the morning.

Just before the store opened, the first 25 customers dug through a kiddie pool of sprinkles in hopes of finding the magic key that will open the store and win the grand prize. The winner gathered his prizes and left before he could be interviewed.

However, there were other prizes being offered. The first 100 people to show proof of befriending owner Dan Brinton , or "Doughnut Dan," on Facebook each received a year's worth of free breakfasts that include a 12-oz coffee and a glazed doughnut.

After the 2006 closing of Tucson's two Krispy Kremes, many feared that the fluffy confection would never return to the area. Free or not, Southern Arizonans were ready for the return of this dangerously delicious breakfast treat.

8260 N. Cortaro Rd., Suite 112, 5:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily. Interstate 10 and Cortaro Road in the Arizona Pavilions plaza. 480-325-6789.
