Solar Culture, a local art gallery and music venue, is hosting a unique cultural event: the throat singers of Chirgilchin. Hailing from Tuva, a small Russian province north of western Mongolia, the foursome takes the stage with ancient folk songs in the Tuvan language.
The art of throat singing is a mesmeric type of vocal manipulation. The performer sings a low tone in the lower throat, creating a flute-like sound.
Their music is based in an ancient art. While it can be considered an acquired taste, it is worth appreciating, if only for the sheer difficulty of the creation of the tone.
But these descriptions don't do throat singing any justice, so go hear it for yourself. Even if this type of music doesn't sound like your cup of tea, the cultural significance of throat singing alone makes this concert worth checking out. Chirgilchin is playing at 8 tonight and it costs $15 to get in. It's also an all-ages event. Solar Culture is located at 31 E. Toole Ave.
