Arizona basketball adds 2012 point guard

Loyola (Los Angeles) High School point guard Jacob Hazzard will join Arizona’s 2012 basketball recruiting class, he announced on his Twitter page Sunday.

“Officially committed to Arizona. #Beardown #Arizona #Wildcat,” he wrote.

Hazzard will join the team as a preferred walk-on, meaning the Wildcats still have one scholarship available for the class after the transfer of Josiah Turner and the departure of Kyryl Natyazhko to Europe.

“I love the facilities, love the campus and it’s a big school,” Hazzard told ESPN.com. “I wanted to go to a big-time school. The basketball fan base there is ridiculous. Everyone is supportive.”

Hazzard scored 12.3 points and dished out 1.2 assists per game during his senior year at Loyola, according to Maxpreps.com. The 6-foot guard shot just over 40 percent from 3-point range and just over 42 percent from the field. He knocked down 84 percent of his shots from the free-throw line.

Hazzard had a number of offers from Division III schools, according to ESPN, but a visit to the UA last weekend won him over. He is the grandson of former UCLA Coach Walt Hazzard
