Arizona second baseman Trent Gilbert was named the Pac-12 offensive Player of the Week for his performance this past week against Utah.
The sophomore went 5-for-13 with two doubles and six runs batted in against the Utes. Gilbert is hitting .348 with a team and conference leading 35 RBIs. His five triples tie him for second in the nation with four other players.
This past Saturday, Gilbert came through with what turned out to be a game winning, run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning in the Wildcats’ 2-1 victory over Utah.
Gilbert also is fourth in the Pac-12 in hits (39) and in runs scored (24). Since being moved to the cleanup spot in the batting order on March 24 at Oregon, Gilbert is 8-for-18 with five runs scored.
Discipline at the plate has also been key to Gilbert’s success this season. The Torrance, Calif. native has 11 walks and just 11 strikeouts on the season. Gilbert is also 4-6 this season in stolen bases.
Even though freshman Kevin Newman beat out the sophomore for the starting shortstop position, Gilbert still posts a 97.6 percent fielding percentage from the right side of the infield and his 88 assists is tied for second-most in the conference.
This is Gilbert’s first time being awarded offensive Player of the Week. He is also the first Wildcats position player this year to win the award. Junior pitcher James Farris was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-17.
Arizona (18-11, 3-6 Pac-12) hosts California next week (16-12, 5-4 Pac-12) for a three game weekend series at Hi Corbett Field. Game three on Sunday will be aired live on ESPNU.
