The ASUA senate meeting on Wednesday emphasized upcoming events and discussed the last portion of its efforts to register students to vote.
Associated Students of the University of Arizona Sen. Will Box mentioned his efforts with the ASUA Pride Alliance as it prepares for Coming Out Week, which starts on Oct. 10.
“I’m hoping to be heavily involved in that,” Box said.
A key part of Coming Out Week is the Out and Proud advertisement, in which students and employees at the UA can show their support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community by including their names in an ad.
Hannah Sager, presidential chief of staff, mentioned that the Out and Proud advertisement has almost reached its goal of 1000 people, which was a leap from last year’s goal of 600 people. Prior to the meeting, Sager had been informed that only 75 more people needed to sign up for the ad in order to achieve the goal.
Jordan Allison, executive vice president, signed the ad herself and encouraged everyone to sign the Out and Proud advertisement to show support for the LGBTQ community, saying that it is important for elected officials of the school to show their support for such things.
Box mentioned that he is working to arrange a meeting to discuss the transgender name policy.
A representative for ASUA President Issac Ortega brought up the national sexual assault awareness campaign called “It’s On Us,” which is pairing with the White House and the Pac-12 Conference schools. It is going to launch on Nov. 13 on campus.
The representative mentioned that ASUA will be working in partnership with the Pac-12 for “It’s On Us.” ASUA will also work in conjunction with the Oasis Program, The Women’s Resource Center and Greg Byrne, and other athletic directors are considering an athletes video for the campaign.
ASUA Sen. Joe Zanoni said that continuing efforts to utilize Turbovote.org and get students registered before elections include the welcome back concert that will be held on the mall at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The event will include registering voters through Turbovote.org and forms.
The concert will also include performances from Aloe Blacc, Tyler Ward and Luna Aura to communicate the importance of student voting.
“It’s the final sprint for voter registration,” Zanoni said.
