Arizona Wildcat hockey is back. On Friday evening, the team kicks-off their home opener against the ASU Sun Devils at the Tucson Convention Center.
The Wildcats have some lofty expectations going into this season as they look to knock of their rival at home. Arizona hockey is defined by this particular rivalry and the right to possess the Cactus Cup, the award given to the winner of the season matchups between ASU and Arizona. The cup is currently is possession by the Wildcats after UA won last season’s head-to-head matchups (5-1-1).
The Wildcats come into the new season looking to hold onto the cup and with this team, it looks like that could be a strong possibility. Head coach Chad Berman has returned for another season and has brought back 18 players with him. Returning that many players from a team that finished with 23 wins, 12 losses, and 2 ties is a good sign for the Wildcats. Anthony Cusanelli, a sophomore forward, was a breakout star for the team last year as he found himself finishing the year with a number of accolades, including All-American Honors.
With Cusanelli returning to lead the Wildcats there is much optimism in the program. The Wildcats will also look to reach the American Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament for the second consecutive year. The road back begins with weekend matchup that should be an electric environment.
