STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden completed a school-record 42 passes and threw for 397 yards as Arizona fell to the No. 9 Cowboys, 37-14, Thursday.
UA quarterback Nick Foles finished with 398 yards on 37-of-51 passing. Wideout Dan Buckner led the team with 142 yards on 10 catches while receiver Austin Hill caught eight balls for 128 yards. The Wildcats, meanwhile, could only muster 51 rushing yards, 29 of which came from freshman Ka’Deem Carey in garbage time.
Arizona returns home to host No. 6 Stanford next Saturday.
Arizona forced Oklahoma State (2-0) into a 3rd-and-7 in its first possession, but the Cowboys picked up the first down to jump-start a nine-play, 88-yard scoring drive that included a 47-yard run by running back Joseph Randle.
Randle ended the drive with a one-yard plunge into the endzone to give the Cowboys a 7-0 lead.
After a Kyle Dugandzic punt bounced into the endzone for a touchback, OSU put together a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive that culminated in a three-yard touchdown catch by Justin Blackmon — a week after Louisiana-Lafayette snapped his streak of 12 straight games with a touchdown catch.
Arizona (1-1) went three-and-out on its next two possessions, gaining a combined four yards.
Oklahoma State extended its lead to 21-0 on a four-yard touchdown run from Randle, his second score of the day, ending a 10-play, 70-yard drive that took just 3:06 off the clock. It was the Cowboys’ second scoring drive that took 3:30 or less.
Arizona had a chance to close the Oklahoma State lead to 21-7, but couldn’t convert on a 4th-down conversion from the OSU 5-yardline.
The Wildcats finally got on the board when running back Keola Antolin scored on a one-yard carry with 7:38 to play in the third quarter to make it 21-7.
Arizona appeared to be on the verge of staging a comeback after stopping OSU on a third-and-five play, but Cowboy punter Quinn Sharp picked up 23 yards on a fake punt. Junior safety Mark Watley intercepted Weeden five plays later, but Arizona was unable to muster anything offensively.
Weeden and Blackmon connected on another score with 30 seconds left in the third, putting OSU up 27-7 after kicker Quinn Sharp missed the extra point. Blackmon finished with XXX yards, his 14th-straight game with over 100 yards receiving.
Arizona failed to convert on fourth-and-10 from the OSU 33-yard line with 13:38 to play in the game, and OSU answered with a 63-yard pass to Randle before backup running back Jeremy Smith scored from six yards out, giving OSU a 34-7 lead.
