Three “Remembering January 8th” events will be held on and around the UA campus to honor the first anniversary in 2011 when 19 people, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, were shot during a public “Congress on Your Corner” event in a Tucson shopping center. To commemorate the shootings in which six were killed, community organizations have put together a variety of events.
7 a.m.– Ben’s Bells Distribution
Ben’s Bells, hand painted bells to promote kindness, will be placed randomly throughout Tucson to remember those who died on Jan. 8, 2011 and to thank the Tucson community for their support.

3 p.m.– Reflections: Honoring the lives of January 8 shooting victims
Speeches will be given regarding the life of Giffords and the individuals killed on Jan. 8.
Speakers include: Sen. Mark Udall for Congresswoman Giffords, U.S. District Judge Raner Collins for John Roll, chief judge of the U.S. District of Arizona, Lattie Coor, former Arizona State University president for Gabe Zimmerman, Serenity Hammerich and Jaime Stone, best friends of Christina-Taylor Green for Green, Giffords’ staffer Ron Barber for Dorwan Stoddard and Rev. Andrew Ross, pastor at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Tucson for Phyllis Schneck.

6:30 p.m.– Candlelight Vigil
The vigil will honor both victims and survivors of the Jan. 8 shooting. Community members may attend and show their support. Glowsticks will be provided to attendees, and attendees are asked not to bring candles.
The Tucson Symphony Orchestra will perform, and speakers include Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, Giffords’ surgeon Dr. Peter Rhee of The University of Arizona Medical Center–University Campus, Giffords’ husband Mark Kelly and Ron Barber, survivor of the shooting and founder of the Fund for Civility, Respect and Understanding.
