Incoming UA president Robert Shelton said he will be meeting with UA administrators this morning for a brief update on university business.

Shelton, vice chancellor and provost at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, was appointed by the Arizona Board of Regents at the end of January to succeed current President Peter Likins.

Although Shelton is in town for a meeting sponsored by the Council for Chemical Research, he is still making time to meet with administrators like George Davis, executive vice president and provost of the university, and he will also meet with the diversity coalition.

Shelton said although he has not had much contact with Likins, he has been speaking with Davis. Shelton said the main university issues on his mind are the university’s presence in Phoenix with the medical expansion and the retirement of one of the UA’s top administrators, Saundra Taylor, senior vice president for campus life.

Shelton arrived in Tucson Monday evening and will be returning to North Carolina this afternoon.

Shelton recently chose a home in Tucson and said he and his wife are very excited for the move to the Old Pueblo.

“”If all goes well, we should own it by the end of the month,”” he said.

Another visit is planned for mid-June, when Shelton said he will be meeting with UA Foundation President Jim Moore and also moving his family’s belongings to Tucson. Shelton will become the UA’s 19th president July 1. Likins will retire June 30 at the age of 70.
