The UA Enactus club is holding a Career Expo in the Student Union Memorial Center to help students find jobs or internships for the summer.
The annual Career Expo is hosted by UA Enactus in partnership with Career Services. Companies participating in the fair include retail stores such as Kohl’s, Forever 21 and PetSmart, car rental services such as Enterprise Rent-A-Car and GEICO and even big corporations such as Walmart and Target.
“Coming to the Career Expo, it helps … because you might get a job or a summer internship, but it also helps our club and it helps your community,” said Brittany Svoboda, an economics senior and co-president of UA Enactus. “It works three-fold to not only help you and help the corporations that we’re meeting with, but it also helps the Tucson community as well.”
Marilyn Weigand, a physiology junior and secretary of the UA Enactus club, said she’s hoping to see a large turnout of students at the event, which is open to all majors.
“We’d really like to see a good representation from as many majors as possible,” Weigand said.
“Our recruiters really love to see people who come from diverse backgrounds, as far as what they’re studying, because they’re not looking for just one kind of ‘cookie-cutter’ student.”
After Jan. 15, employers could expect to pay between $200 and $550 for a space, depending on whether they were a nonprofit organization, government-related or a corporation. The money employers pay for a space at the Career Expo goes to support UA Enactus.
UA Enactus, which is short for Entrepreneurial Action and Us, is a group on campus that dedicates itself to building a community of student, academic and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.
Svoboda said there are about 30 members participating in the events UA Enactus is working on this year. The projects UA Enactus works on vary from supporting financial education, to food drives, to refugee projects, to garden and nutrition, all with a goal of giving back to the community.
Weigand said the group also partners with local businesses and larger corporations that support the organization worldwide.
“What we do is try find ways to … solve any of the issues we are seeing in our community in a way that is sustainable,” Weigand said. “So we can set up a system … putting together a project that will, over a couple of years, solve the issue in a way where we can step back and the community members can take it over.”
UA Enactus will host a food drive at the Walmart at El Con Center on Saturday, a project that members said they hope will help find a sustainable way to create lasting hunger relief in the community.
The club will host the Career Expo in the third-floor ballroom of the student union today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in partnership with Career Services.
