The Arizona club hockey team’s first day of a three-day tryout session at the Tucson Convention Center starts tonight at 5:30.
The Icecats coaching staff decided to tweak the tryout schedule this year to give all potential players the chance at making the team. In years past, all three days consisted of five-on-five scrimmages. This year the Tuesday session will consist primarily of skating, passing and shooting drills, with the expectation the skating drills will help shake off summer rust.
“”Most of the kids don’t skate all summer,”” said UA head coach Leo Golembiewski. “”We hope this way they’ll be able to have a better showing the next day as opposed to jumping right into scrimmages.””
The Wednesday and Thursday sessions will be held as per tradition – nothing but five-on-five scrimmages – which also start at 5:30 p.m.
Golembiewski said he expects 33 skaters and five goalies to compete for the 27 skating positions and three goalie spots available.
If anyone is interested who did not attend last week’s meeting, Golembiewski said to arrive at TCC by 4 p.m. to fill out necessary paperwork.
