Students around the country were jarred yesterday when an unidentified gunman killed 32 Virginia Tech students. Last week, a student in the Manzanita-Mohave Residence Hall was sexually assaulted. We asked students on campus: Have you ever had problems with campus safety?
“”I don’t see any problems with safety. I haven’t really had any run-ins with UAPD, so I can’t say that they’re doing a bad job.””
– Andrew Flamm, media arts senior
“”I feel safe when I’m with my friends, but when I’m walking by myself it feels dangerous. I think UAPD could put more people on campus.””
– Michelle Yoon, political science sophomore
“”I don’t feel safe. I have a tendency to study late at night at the ILC, and I have to get my bike by the library. On two occasions, people have tried to sell me drug paraphernalia – coke and marijuana.””
– Alok Patel, molecular and cellular biology senior
“”I don’t live on campus, but I used to, and I still hang out at the residence halls sometimes. I don’t like how people will leave the (residence hall) doors propped open. There should be more security there.””
– Krista Soper, pre-physiological sciences sophomore
“”I don’t feel safe. I’m scared when I have to walk home at night. I try to take SafeRide, but it takes like 20 minutes. They should put more money in SafeRide to get more cars.””
– Jaharri Asten, pre-pharmacy freshman
“”I’ve never had any issues, but I hear stories. Sometimes when I’m walking around campus at night, I feel unsafe.””
– Megan Coe, sophomore majoring in English and creative writing
