In what was one of the more disappointing losses during Arizona football’s historic 19-game losing streak, here are a few key stats that stood out in this game against University of Washington. 

Turnovers: 

Arizona lost the turnover battle 2-0, the most crucial one being an interception thrown by Will Plummer in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats were up 16-7 with all of the momentum having run the ball five straight times on the drive with success. They tried a play-action pass on what was supposed to be a “safe” screen pass but instead of throwing it away or throwing it into the ground when the play breaks down, Plummer threw it straight into the hands of Washington defensive lineman Tuli Letuligasenoa. Four plays later, Washington drove the ball downfield for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 16-14, which was the beginning of a disastrous final quarter for the entire Arizona team. 

Penalties: 

This was the second game this season in which Arizona committed at least 10 penalties. One of the most brutal ones came with a few minutes left in the game when the Wildcats had Washington stopped on the drive to try and get the ball back down 21-16 with just over two minutes left in the game, but they had too many men on the field which resulted in a first down for Washington. It is these self-inflicting wounds that the Wildcats simply can’t afford.

Rushing attack: 

The lone bright spot from the game for Arizona was the rushing attack. Drake Anderson and Michael Wiley both wounded up not playing, leaving freshman Stevie Rocker Jr. and Jalen John to lead the backfield. The freshman duo combined to run for 152 yards on 27 carries with the Wildcats as a team totaling 218 rushing yards on the ground. 

Arizona will now head out to USC to take on the Trojans on Saturday, Oct. 30, with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 p.m. MST.
