The Arizona baseball team opened a four-game series against the University of Nevada, Reno with a 6-5 walk-off win Thursday night at Hi Corbett Field. Here are a few key stats from the victory.
Four-hit night for Tanner O’Tremba:
O’Tremba got things going in the fourth inning with a single to right and he would score Arizona’s first run later in the inning. He would then hit doubles in three consecutive at bats all to left field coming in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings. His last double came in the bottom of the ninth with Nik McClaughry on first and the Wildcats in need of a big play, and he delivered in the clutch to advance the winning run to third base.
Three key RBIs for Chase Davis:
In a game in which Arizona struggled to put runs on the scoreboard early, Davis was the one making big plays at the plate. He singled to right field in the fourth inning scoring O’Tremba from second base, and again he helped O’Tremba score in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly. Davis’s third and most crucial RBI came in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded. He stood in the batter’s box with a full count and watched as the fourth ball sailed past him into the catcher’s mitt. Davis walked and the Wildcats walked off with the win, 6-5.

Daniel Susac reaches base five times:
It went down in the box score as only a two-for-two night at the plate for catcher Daniel Susac, but those numbers don’t tell the whole story. He walked in his first plate appearance and was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning. He singled to left field in the sixth inning and gave Arizona a 5-4 lead in the seventh with an RBI single to right-center field which scored O’Tremba. In a tied game with runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth, Nevada chose to walk Susac and take their chances with Davis instead.
“I mean, Chase [Davis], Dan [Susac], OT [O’Tremba], how about all nine of them? I trust all of them,” head coach Chip Hale said on who he would prefer batting with the bases loaded.
Game two of this series is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. MST on Friday night.
