  • Hardcore Jungilism – It would be my semi-educated guess that any sort of “”jungilism”” would be pretty hardcore. All that humidity, poisonous plants, yet-to-be discovered insects and exotic animals far removed from civilization as we know it – you’d have to be pretty hardcore. But then, so is electronica music. 9 p.m. $5. Vaudeville Cabaret, 110 E. Congress St. 21+
  • Making beef jerky – It’s that time of the year again when beef jerky makers come out of the woodwork. Oh, wait, there is no time of the year like that – and there never should be. Have you seen that stuff? Learn a variety of methods for making your own smoked dehydrated meats, plus a few secret recipes. 7 p.m. Free. Sportsmans Warehouse, 3945 W. Costco Drive

  • Congress Comes Of Age: 21st Birthday Party and Tucson’s 231st Birthday – This three-night, two-weekend dual celebration musical festival kicks off tomorrow, hosted by the Tucson trio of David Slutes, Al Perry and Howe Gelb. A huge lineup includes both local bands and out-of-towners. They will also be showing music and Tucson-related films at The Screening Room. 7 p.m. $10 per day, $25 for three-day music pass or $30 for an all-music, all-movie pass, available at The Rialto Theatre box office, all Tucson Zia Records and Bookman’s locations.   • “”Constructions and Landscapes”” – Featured works by Portland artist Katie Holly open the Conrad Wilde Gallery’s new season celebrating their one-year anniversary. This exhibit is a mixed media display of utilitarian structure and landscape. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free. Conrad Wilde Gallery, 210 N. Fourth Ave.
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd with the Occ Band – Freebird! It had to be said. I’m sure these veteran rockers can still put on a good show, but they’re probably nothing like they used to be. 8 p.m. $25 to $60. Casino Del Sol’s AVA Amphitheatre, 5655 W. Valencia Road

  • La Rocca – Another indie pop/rock band, but this one hails from Dublin, Ireland, and has generated a lot of buzz, as they say in the industry, for their work with producer Tony Hoffer who has worked with Beck and Belle and Sebastian. I have to admit, they’re not half bad. If you can break away from the Club Congress festivities, catch them before they start their opening tour spot for Phoenix. 9:30 p.m. $5. Plush, 340 E. Sixth St. 21+

  • Gallery at the Gardens September exhibit – There’s nothing like a nature and art combo to wind down with on a Sunday afternoon. Irving J. Olson, a 92-year-old man, will have his prints of huge butterfly sculptures on display at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. We’re talking 2 1/2-foot tall butterflies. Exhibit opens at 8:30 a.m. Free to view exhibit. Tucson Botanical Gardens, 2150 N. Alvernon Way
  • East Side Scrabble Club – Remember when we tested out engaging our minds Thursday night at the public forum? Well let’s try and gear up for the week with a little Scrabble action. You must bring your own Scrabble board. 2 p.m. $2 or free for first-timers. Starbucks, 7200 E. Broadway Blvd.

  • Jobs With Justice Labor Day picnic – Do not go to your 10 a.m. class, because you’ll be the only sucker there, except for maybe some other poor, helpless freshman soul who also forgot it was Labor Day. You can show up to a free picnic hosted by the AFL-CIO. Free food and fun. 10 a.m. Free. Reid Park Ramada 1, corner of East 22nd Street and South Country Club Road.

  • “”Disturbed Domestic: Housewife 2006″” – “”Desperate Housewives”” doesn’t start up again for a while, but this mixed-media exhibit by Angela Harder Wilson and Kristin Skees is inspired by the contemporary housewife. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free. The Joseph Gross and Lionel Rombach Galleries
  • Free wine tasting – The first two words of that title will probably sell anyone. Have your own “”Sideways”” experience with the cheapest way you’ll ever get a buzz. You might just have to learn how to be intoxicated and refined at the same time, not a bad combo for those who plan on graduating and will be needing these skills for upcoming company parties. 5:30 p.m. Free. Hacienda del Sol, 5601 N. Hacienda del Sol Road. 21+

  • Enchiladas – It’s a little pricey, but you can totally play this off as an educational class to your parents. Use your recently acquired – and hopefully not already spentÿ- financial aid money and become the chef you’ve always dreamed of. OK, so you’ll only be skilled in one dish, but only you and I will know that. Howard Thompson demonstrates how to prepare this tortilla dish. Pre-registration requested. 6 p.m. $50. Culinary Concepts, 2930 N. Swan Road, Plaza Palomino.
