The University of Arizona women’s tennis team broke a two-meet losing streak by going 1-1 over the weekend against the Colorado Buffaloes and Utah Utes. The women’s tennis team is now 9-4 with a 1-1 record in Pac-12 conference play. Arizona is no longer undefeated at home after losing to the Utes on Saturday, their record stands at 8-1, the team has been less fortunate on the road with a 1-3 record.
The University of Arizona women’s tennis team went into Friday’s game on a two-meet losing streak from the previous road trip. The Colorado Buffs traveled to Arizona with 2-2 record looking for a big win before playing rival Arizona State on Saturday. Arizona completed a 4-0 win over the Buffs improving their record to 9-3. They won two of three doubles matches (6-4) and (6-1), losing one (6-4). The Wildcats went on to win three singles matches to close out the victory. Paris Corley went (6-2) and (6-1), while Marie Van Aelst won (6-0) and (6-1). Senior Lauren Marker was exceptional in singles competition not conceding a point in three straight games in the first set. Marker would win her first two sets (6-0) and (6-2).
The Wildcats were unable to continue their winning ways when they lost 4-3 to the Utes on Saturday in the second game of the double-header. The Utes came out on top in the doubles competition winning the first two matches (6-4) and (6-0). The Wildcats battled back from from being down 1-0 with three wins in singles matches. Corley won (6-2) and (6-1), while Camila Wesbrooks won two sets (7-6) and (6-2). Lauren Marker won the first two sets (6-1) and (6-1). Utah tied the meet 3-3 with a win over Marie Van Aelst (6-4) and (6-2) and a three-set match against Samantha Czarniak (6-2), (1-6), and (1-6). The meet came down to three sets involving Wildcat Devin Chypyha. Chypyha lost her first set (6-7) but came back in the second to win (7-6). Chypyha lost her third set (2-6) giving the Utes the overall victory.
Lauren Marker continues her impressive senior year. She now has a 13-1 record and sophomore Camila Wesbrooks is now 11-2. Freshman Paris Corley improved her record to 10-3, an impressive record for a freshman.
The University of Arizona Wildcats return to action on the road Friday to take on California and Saturday to play Stanford. The Wildcats will be back home on Friday March 24th to take on Rice University.
Arizona will look to bounce back when they return from spring break on March 17th to take on Pac 12 rival California and Stanford on Saturday.
