As of the morning of March 1, three arrests have been made in the homicide investigation of Forrest Keys, a University of Arizona student that was shot and killed the night of Feb. 20 outside of the Cherry Avenue garage on campus.
On Feb. 25, five days after the fatal shooting, the Tucson Police Department sent out a news release informing the public of the identification and arrest of one of the suspects, 17-year-old Alonzo Orosco.
Another media release was sent out by TPD Monday, March 1, informing the public that two more suspects had been identified and arrested, Ruben Young and Roberto Joaquin Camargo, both 17 years old. It did not specify how each of the suspects were involved in the shooting, but that the suspected shooter and driver were in custody.
All three were charged with first degree murder and drive-by shooting. Monday’s report also stated that the 2008 maroon Cadillac DTS, the suspect car, has not been recovered.
On Feb. 21, President Dr. Robert C. Robbins sent an email informing the UA community of a student death that had been the result of the previous night’s shooting at the Cherry Avenue garage that students had been alerted of via a UAlert.
It was later discovered on Feb. 22 that the student’s name was Forrest Keys, a 20-year-old communications major and member of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity via ZBT’s Instagram. UAPD and TPD both released that they would be jointly working on the investigation that they classified as a homicide.
A memorial was held virtually for Keys via YouTube on Saturday, Feb. 27, by his family and friends to celebrate his life. Robbins sent out an email on Friday, Feb. 26, informing the community of the memorial, as well as the creation of a scholarship in honor of Keys, the Forrest Beckett Keys Memorial Scholarship Endowment that was supplemented with an initial $25,000 donation.
Donations to the scholarship can be made here. Robbins also informed of the planning of an upcoming vigil by ZBT, with details to be made public by ZBT when they are finalized.
TPD and UAPD are still asking the public to call 520-88-CRIME if anyone has any information regarding this case.
