A man was arrested for having an open container of alcohol, marijuana and a glass pipe in his car and for an outstanding warrant at 5:38 a.m. Jan. 2, reports stated.

The man was pulled over by a police officer at Second Street and Palm Avenue for not signaling a turn.

A records check showed the man had a warrant for failing to appear in court for a drug paraphernalia charge. He also had previous burglary and drug use convictions.

Police found a bottle of beer, a glass pipe and about 1.9 grams of marijuana in his car.

The man also had several spools of copper wire in the car, which he told police he took from his house to use for gas money.

Police are investigating whether any construction sites on or near campus are missing copper wiring.

The man was arrested and booked into Pima County Jail.

An SUV caught on fire at Sixth Street and Highland Avenue at 6:45 a.m. Jan. 2, reports stated.

The driver of the SUV said the vehicle had stalled at Fifth Street and Wilmont Avenue, but she was able to restart it and drive to Sixth Street and Highland Avenue where it stalled again and caught on fire.

The Tucson Fire Department extinguished the fire and no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but was possibly started by an unsecured battery.

A car was broken into between about 4 p.m. Jan. 1 and 6 a.m. Jan 2 on the second level in the Main Gate Parking Garage, 815 E. Second Street, reports stated.

A Marriott valet saw that some of the car’s windows had been broken and the car’s owners were informed.

The owners of the car said they were visiting from California and their car was full of personal items, including clothing and an iPod.

A man was arrested for possession of a gun, speeding and an outstanding warrant, at Elm Street and Tyndall Avenue at 10:31 a.m. Jan 2, reports stated.

A police officer pulled the man over for driving 53 mph on North Euclid Avenue, a 35 mph zone. A record check showed the man had a felony warrant for illegally possessing a weapon.

He also had $18,500 in cash with him for his rent.

The man was arrested and booked into Pima County Jail.

A witness told police she had seen the man throw what looked like a gun from his truck.

Another woman called police at 12:41 p.m. Jan. 2 and said a man had been looking in her yard for a gun.

She said the man told her his friend had thrown the gun from his car and gave her his phone number to call if she had found the gun. She later arranged for a meeting with the man, but he did not appear.

A gun and cell phone found by police were placed into evidence.

A man was arrested for trespassing after refusing to leave the main lobby of the University Medical Center, 1606 E. Lester Street, at 4:56 p.m. Dec. 28, reports stated.

A UMC employee called police and said the man had been discharged from the UMC Inpatient Unit the previous week, but was in the lobby refusing to leave.

The employee told police the man said he requested his replacement ATM card and Social Security card mailed to the UMC employee, but the employee said he did not have the cards.

The employee told the man he could seek help at a local shelter, but the man refused and said he would stay in the lobby as long as he wanted.

The man told police the employee had his cards and that he wanted to stay in the lobby to keep warm.

Police told the man the employee did not have his cards and asked him to leave and not return unless he had an injury or illness but he refused to leave.

He was arrested and booked into Pima County Jail.

A student employee lost his paycheck between noon and 12:10 p.m. Dec. 22, reports stated.

The student called police at 2:16 p.m. and said he could not find the check.

He told police he had lost the check while riding his bike home from the Tree Ring Lab, 530 N. Vine Ave.
