The No. 8 Arizona women’s golf team set a goal to finish in the top three at this week’s NCAA Preview. But after a 6-over 298 first round, accomplishing that goal will be an uphill battle.
The Wildcats finished day one of the tournament tied for eighth place with No. 7 Auburn. They trail current leader Duke by 11 strokes.
“”We hit the ball great from tee to green,”” said UA head coach Shelly Haywood. “”We just didn’t make many putts.””
Leading the way for Arizona was senior Alison Walshe, who shot a 3-under 70 and is tied for fifth place.
Walshe, who is only three strokes out of first place, and the rest of the Wildcats resume play today on the Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
“”We need to make more putts,”” Haywood said. “”If we do that, we can get under par.””
