No. 1 and unbeaten Arizona women’s cross country team ran its way into a first place victory at the NCAA West Regional on Friday, setting it up for the national meet.
The women ran 6,000 meters at Coal Creek Golf Course in Sacramento, Calif., where all six runners finished, including three with top 10 finishes.
Senior Elvin Kibet took eighth place with a time of 19:39. Sophomore Kayla Beattie came in ninth place with 19:39 and freshman Maria Larsson finished in tenth place with a time of 19:43.
Other runners placing for Arizona were junior Nicci Corbin, 12th, with a time of 19:54, junior Stephanie Bulder, 45th place and the final scored runner for Arizona, finished in 20:39.
Also, senior Erin Menefee had a time of 20:49, coming in 58th place, and junior Hanna Peterson ran it in a time of 21:27, good enough for a 105th place finish.
Runners were unavailable for comment. The women earned 84 points for a first place win, edging out Stanford, which took second place with 94 points. Arizona and Stanford will head to the NCAA Championships, as the top two teams from the NCAA West Regional automatically qualify for national spots.
Rounding out the competition for the meet was Oregon in third place with 120 points, San Francisco in fourth place with 140 points and Washington in fifth place with 162 points. Thirteen other teams will be given bids for the national competition, and the top four runners from the meet — if finishing in the top 25 regional — will also have the opportunity for a run at the NCAA Championships.
The women will race toward the national title at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 23. The men’s team ran 10,000 meters at the golf course and ended without automatically qualifying for a shot at national competition.
The men finished in 14th place.
