TEMPE – Maybe the Sun Devils didn’t realize that batting practice was over and the game had actually started.

At any rate, the Arizona baseball team (20-23, 6-9 Pacific 10 Conference) gave up four home runs, two triples and five doubles, falling 22-8 to host No. 20 ASU (30-16, 8-7) at Packard Stadium. ASU scored in every inning except for the fourth, seventh and eighth frames and scored at least five runs in each of three different innings.

ASU pitchers senior Tony Barnette, redshirt senior Daryl Arreola and redshirt freshman Drew Bowman combined to strike out 12 Wildcats, while Arizona pitchers allowed a season-high number of runs, in addition to 22 hits.

“”I think it’s just flat-out embarrassing,”” said junior shortstop Jason Donald, who hit safely in his 14th consecutive game, tying an Arizona season high. “”Short term memory is what we’re going to have to have. This kind of stuff should not happen here. The level this program has been at, this just doesn’t happen.

“”The silver lining you can take out of this is it’s not a Pac-10 game.””

Arizona freshman right-hander Ryan Perry, sophomore southpaw Matt Baugh and rookie righty Mike Colla never allowed the Arizona bats a chance to get the Wildcats back in the game after falling behind early.

“”We had no location tonight, no second pitch,”” he said. “”And then we did some silly things, things that we know in the program that shouldn’t be done. They just hammered it. They just killed it.

“”It’s not a conference loss so hopefully they’ll bounce back. They need to, the will. They’re young, they’re resilient.””

Senior second baseman Brad Boyer said that Arizona needs to put this game behind them and focus on the remaining four weeks of the season.

“”We need to get better quality outings by our pitchers – coming out and being mentally focused right from the get-go,”” he said. “”This is not something we can accept. We’ve got to keep swinging the bats. (We scored) eight runs but I guess we got to keep scoring more.””

ASU added to a nine-run lead by scoring six more times in the fifth inning – five of those runs were scored by the long ball – to go up 19-4. ASU would go on to score three more times over the final four innings.

After the Sun Devils scored five runs in the third, Arizona mounted a modest three-run rally in the fourth frame to make it 13-4.

A pair of ASU home runs in the second inning put the Sun Devils up 7-1 and ended the outing for Perry (2-1). The righty suffered the loss after lasting only 1 2/3 innings and gave up seven hits and eight runs, five of which were earned.

Things got out of hand early in the first inning as two walks, a wild pitch and an error by Boyer allowed the Sun Devils to jump out to a 5-1 lead.

Freshman right fielder Jon Gaston, who had recently returned from ankle and wrist injuries, left the game in the top of the first after he went knee-to-knee with ASU freshman first baseman Brett Wallace as Gaston tagged first base. Boyer scored from third on the play, for the first run of the game.

Freshman center fielder T.J. Steele also left the game early after he bruised a knee running into the outfield fence.

The Wildcats return to Sancet Stadium to conclude their non-conference schedule as they take on Nevada-Las Vegas (19-27) in a three-game set that starts Friday at 7 p.m.

UNLV lost to UC-Irvine last night, 4-3, in 15 innings.
