Arizona gymnast Karin Wurm scored a 9.9 out of 10 on the uneven bars Saturday at Illinois-Chicago to help the Gymcats win their second meet in a row. The Arizona Daily Wildcat caught up with Wurm yesterday to discuss the score, what she would do for a Klondike Bar and the person she wants to meet the most.
Wildcat: In Chicago you had a 9.9 on the bars. How does it feel to score that high?
Karin Wurm: It’s real exciting. I mean, the goal obviously is to get a 10 but when you get close, that’s OK.
W: Have you ever gotten a 10?
KW: I’ve gotten a 10 from one judge, but never had my score be a 10.
W: What would it feel like to actually have a perfect 10?
KW: I would imagine it would be quite the rush to get a perfect score. Hopefully, maybe, sometime this season.
W: Who was your role model growing up?
KW: My role model was my older sister (Lauren). She did gymnastics at the University of Rhode Island and I’ve always looked up to her.
W: Did she get you interested in the sport?
KW: Yeah, well our aunt did gymnastics, and my sister and I were pretty wild kids growing up so we both got put in gymnastics.
W: How much older is your sister?
KW: She’s a year and a half older.
W: What would it mean to be inducted into the “”Ring of Honor”” in McKale Center?
KW: It would be amazing. There are so many amazing athletes here at the U of A and even all over the country. So to earn that kind of honor would definitely be a great feeling.
W: What are the team goals for the rest of the season?
KW: Keep improving, be confident and compete how we train. We’re a really good team and we have the potential to go all the way to nationals, definitely as a team, and we just need to show the rest of the country.
W: If you could meet one person, past or present, who would it be and why?
KW: Hmm, that’s a tough one. (long pause) Hey Brina (Weissman, team manager) if you could meet anyone who would it be?
Weissman: Aubrey Hepburn.
Wurm: Hm, good answer. You might have to go with the standard Brad Pitt answer, I don’t know. Hey Rachelle (Silberg), if you could meet anyone, past or present, who would it be?
Silberg: I don’t know, that’s tough.
Wurm: That’s a really tough question. I have to brainstorm, I need to think of something really good.
W: What would you do for a Klondike Bar?
KW: What would I do for a Klondike Bar? Pretty much anything I guess. (Laughing) What is it, run to the highest mountain, swim across the great lake, dive headfirst into the pit? All of the above.
W: So is Brad Pitt your final answer?
KW: I can think of something better than that. Lame. I might have to call you on that. My mom would say that. Who would you meet?
W: I don’t know. I would have to say that is a tough question.
KW: I’ll say Saddam Hussein, so that I can catch him or Osama Bin Laden. (Laughing) I found him.
W: OK, what is the best Valentine’s Day gift you’ve ever received, since it is tomorrow?
KW: The best Valentine’s Day gift? Once I had my entire room filled with balloons.
W: Pink ones?
KW: Yeah, and red and white ones. And that was pretty cool.
W: Was chocolate involved?
KW: Yeah, there was chocolate and flowers. Chocolate, always an A-plus and I’m a big flowers person.
KW: Oh, and I decided that I want to meet Harry Potter.
