A man was arrested June 4 for shoplifting a backpack at the UofA Bookstore, 1209 E. University Blvd., and for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for DUI.
The man had run from store security after they discovered him stuffing his old backpack into a new one and attempting to leave. When security tried to catch him, the man shoved the pack into the security officer and ran away with the old one.
When police caught up with him, he said he threw his pack as he ran. It was discovered in the fenced yard of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority house, 1510 N. Vine Ave. It contained nothing but personal items.
The security officer declined to press assault charges. The man was told not to return to the bookstore or he would be arrested for trespassing.
A man in his 20s was seen drinking alcohol and urinating in public in the alley on the north side of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority house, 1775 E. First St., June 1.
When police arrived, the man was found with a beer can in his hand, about one-quarter full. He denied urinating in public.
The police asked him to come out from between two dumpsters and turn around, so the officer could check him for weapons. After patting him down, the officer noticed items in his pocket, but the man denied him permission to inspect the items.
After receiving notification that the man had a warrant for his arrest, the officer proceeded to complete his search, finding in the pocket two metal pipes with burnt marijuana in them and a plastic bag containing 5.9 grams of marijuana.
The man said he was drinking between the dumpsters because he was not allowed to drink at his group home. He was arrested for failure to appear in the second degree, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The grandmother became suspicious of the man when her granddaughter told her that he said she would have to drive to Florida with him for training.

Police pulled over a blue Cadillac near East Drachman Street and North First Avenue after discovering the car’s license plate belonged to a Ford. The driver said he put his friend’s license plate on the Cadillac because his tags were expired.
He said he did not realize his friend’s tags had also expired, in 2004.
