The University of Arizona women’s basketball team (17-12, 8-8 in Big 12) will host Texas Tech University (14-15, 3-13 in Big 12) on Tuesday, Feb. 25 in McKale Center at 6 p.m. Arizona is seeking to extend their win streak to three consecutive games after securing a 74-72 overtime win over the University of Houston on Feb. 22.
History vs. Texas Tech
Wednesday’s matchup marks the fourth meeting between the two programs with the Red Raiders leading the series 2-1. Texas Tech won the last meeting back on Nov. 21. 2014, winning 57-54. The Wildcats will seek revenge for the first time in over a decade.
Texas Tech players to watch
Fifth-year head coach Krista Gerlichis is leading the struggling Red Raiders into Tuesday’s game. Gerlich, who played for Texas Tech in 1993, has guided the team to 17 wins last season, having the best start in program history winning their first 11 games this season.
Junior Jasmine Shavers headlines the backcourt for Texas Tech. The 5-foot-8 guard averages a team-leading 14.8 points and 1.6 steals a game while shooting 86.6% from the free-throw line. In a loss to University of Central Florida on Feb. 22 Shavers finished with 19 points and five rebounds, hitting 6-of-15 shots from the floor.
Shavers shines while playing on the road averaging 18.3 points per game, four boards and just shy of two takeaways a game. The junior guard looks to keep the hot hand going Tuesday night.
Bailey Maupin compliments Shavers in the backcourt, averaging 12.7 points, a team-leading 2.2 assists while shooting 38.2% from the field. In a tough 66-60 loss to No. 25 Baylor University, Maupin collected 15 points and four rebounds, finishing on 50% shooting for the night.
The Red Raiders currently ride an eight-game losing skid and have not won a game in over a month. Their most recent victory came on the road against Houston in dominating fashion 62-44 on Jan. 22.
Wildcats to watch
Ninth-year head coach Adia Barnes leads the red-hot Wildcats into Senior Night. The Wildcats have won back-to-back games after beating the BYU Cougars 65-57 on Feb. 19 and Houston in overtime 74-72 on Feb. 22.
Tuesday night will mark Isis Beh’s last game ever in McKale. The senior forward averages 8 points a game and almost four rebounds while putting up 84% from the charity stripe. In the win against Houston, Beh played a game-high 41 minutes and tied with a team-leading 18 points and contributed nine rebounds on 7-for-14 shooting.
Breya Cunningham continues to provide an offensive edge. The 6-foot-4 sophomore puts up 11.2 points, a team-leading 7.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks on average. Cunningham secured a double-double in the 74-72 victory over Houston, finishing with 17 points, 15 rebounds while also bringing in a pair of blocks.
Jada Williams and Skylar Jones combined for 34 points. Williams scored 18 points while 16 points were contributed by Jones. Additionally, Jones went a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line while also grabbing five steals in Saturday’s win. The sophomores look to keep the offensive efficiency going in a crucial Tuesday night matchup with the Wildcats’ NCAA tournament hopes on the line.
