Coming off another sub-par performance, the No. 50 Arizona men’s golf team heads to San Martin, Calif., for their final tournament of the fall.
The CordeValle Collegiate begins today and finishes tomorrow.
The Wildcats will once again go with a different lineup; they have not used the same lineup in consecutive tournaments this season.
Arizona’s five will consist of seniors Josh Esler and Josh Wilks, juniors Creighton Honeck and Travis Esway and sophomore Ben Fox.
Junior Trey Denton had been in the lineup for every tournament this year, but is not with the team in California. He said he unsure of why he was removed from the top five.
Denton thinks UA head coach Rick LaRose was unhappy with his play in the Wildcats’ last tournament, the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship Oct. 29.
The Wildcats face a stiff challenge as they attempt to finish their disappointing fall season with some positive momentum going into the break before the spring campaign.
CordeValle features a strong 17-team field, including four of the top 10 teams in the nation.
No. 3 UCLA, No. 5 Coastal Carolina, No. 8 Lamar and No. 9 Stanford headline a field that also features six teams from the Pacific 10 Conference.
The Wildcats’ mantra for CordeValle is finish strong. Esler, who described this season as the most disappointing fall in his four years, believes the team is due for a breakthrough.
“”We want to end the fall season on a good note and finish with a win,”” he said.
