A UA graduate student was arrested on campus after yesterday’s Arizona for Education Rally and cited on charges of criminal damage and disturbing an educational institution.

His crime: drawing with chalk.

Jacob Miller, a masters student in Geography, was arrested just before 1 p.m., a few hours after he and about 10 other students drew pictures and messages in over 80 locations around campus.

The drawings were part of yesterday’s student rally. Some depicted outlines of bodies with price tags, which rally organizers said were meant to represent the commercialization of higher education.

Associated Director of Facilities Management Chris Kopach said he was contacted by the University of Arizona Police Department and asked to assign maintenance personnel to wash up the chalk drawings.

The process cost about $1,000, Kopach said.

Many of the drawings were washed away by the time the rally began, at about 12:15 p.m., rally organizers said.

An unnamed university employee called police at about 8:30 a.m. to report the chalk drawings, said UAPD spokesman Juan Alvarez.

Miller was charged on two counts of class one misdemeanor, each carrying a maximum penalty of six months in jail and $2,500, plus possible restitution charges for the cleanup, Alvarez said.

Miller’s court date is set for Oct. 14.

Chalk drawings are considered criminal damage because the university has to pay for someone to clean it up, Alvarez said.

Miller said he was arrested sometime after the rally ended at 12:45 p.m. when officers flagged him down outside the Administration Building.

Miller said officers told him they were able to identify him using video surveillance footage.

Miller told the Daily Wildcat his reaction to the arrest was “disbelief, surprise.”

Alvarez said there were more than 80 instances where chalk was applied around campus.

“It wasn’t just applied on the sidewalk. It was applied on other areas and it interferes with the aesthetics of the building.”

The chalk drawings were spread out across campus, Miller said, including in front of both the library and the Administration building. The drawings, he said, were meant to draw peoples’ attention to the important budget cut issue.

Miller said his arrest would likely generate more support for his cause.

“I guess it’ll raise awareness that there was a rally,” he said. “In that sense it’s publicity.”

The UAPD gets a lot of action don't they? Oh no, try and investigate real crimes, i.e. wildcat editions that were STOLEN, Oh no, that's not a crime, it is 'vandalism' (Wildcat, October 9th edition). Now graduate students are getting arrested for expressing their views on an university sponsored event, and are charged with disturbing an educational institution and criminal damage?!! When did we loose our freedom of speech? Not to mention, sometime last year, spring, there were these horrendous anti-abortion posters in front of the student union, the police didn't seem to be concerned with any disturbances on an educational institution, it was definitely not aesthetically pleasing, and I'm sure those pictures are not considered 'lawn decoration'. America land of the FREE, so long as you have the 'right' views.

The reason there is no chalking is because in Arizona it doesn't rain. If every group chalked on campus, the sidewalk would not be visible. It's not that ridiculous. And yeah, we live in the desert and are running out of water... Just wash it off? That is such a waste. Jail sentence is ridiculous, but seriously, what's wrong with posters or working to get media coverage and get your voice heard in a real way. Chalking isn't really a great way to get a message across anyway.

I am Jacob's mother and I have alot to say. I will share only that I am thankful for all the support jacob has received throughout this injustice. Also i am hoping that the dean gives jacob what he deserves-AN APOLOGY!!!!!!!!!!!

We are/have been living in a Police State for decades. This is but another example.

Law enforcement is no longer there to 'server and protect'. There primary goal is to arrest as many people as possible. The number of arrests are part of cops' performance reviews. The more arrests and charges the greater the chance of getting a raise. Read the book Arrest Proof Yourself, written by a cop. The horrible things cops do is very surprising.

I'm a strong supporter of laws and law enforcement, but given lax enforcement of far more serious crimes, this is a pretty embarrassing incident for the University and its police force. I hope they work quickly to undo this.

Gosh, I wonder how much Mr. Miller would have been fined if he had Tee Pee'd the Deans house. They probably would have had to break out the entire grounds crew to solve that dilemma. Man that could have run into the millions if it was up the the idiot that oversees the spending budget.

that's funny, we also had 3 bikes stolen from campus over the last few years... things are beginning to make sense... THANKS UAPD... FOR NOTHING!

Now I see why the 3 bikes I've had stolen from campus locations were never found, and no one was ever arrested. They were busy getting those darn chalk-using grads students off the streets. I feel so much better now.

Hell the Star has hardly said a thing about this. They published a short piece and didn't even turn on the comments...strangely.

"It interferes with the aesthetics of the building." - What's more important at the UA, buildings, or the quality of education? Why does the Administration plan to spend millions of dollars on the stadium when there is not
enough money for education?
Shocked!

A sample of these comments should be published in the Sept. 28 or 29 Wildcat
and in the Arizona Daily Star and Citizen. Is there no more freedom of expression
on the UA Campus?

Both charges carrying fines of $2500 and 6 months in jail???

You'd get a much lighter sentence for a more serious crime.

UAPD, absolutely pathetic

Dear President Sheldon,
I would like to offer my services as chalk sidewalk cleaner. For a mere $500 I will clean all the chalk off your sidewalks. Yes, that is correct, for half of what you are currently spending I will take care of your chalk drawing problem. Also, I would like to extend my sympathies to you. For the first time I feel like I truly understand our financial problems. If it takes you $1,000 to clean up chalk it is no wonder that we are having money troubles. So please next time there is chalk you need to get rid of, give me a call.
Your faithful servant,

As a taxpayer in the State of Arizona I'm appalled that $1000 of my money went to removing chalk drawings that were neither obscene nor permanent. How about some common sense here? Send some students out with buckets of water and brushes. And while you're at it congratulate them for advocating for their educational community. Meanwhile, please use my dollars to reduce the class sizes in Centennial Hall from 1500 to 1000.
