Lisa Oyen November 2009

Lisa Oyen has been named the new head soccer coach just four days after the Arizona soccer team’s final game of the season, Arizona Athletic Director Jim Livengood announced.

“I’m very thankful to be given this opportunity,” Oyen said through a statement on the team’s website Thursday. “I’m very optimistic about the future of the program.”

Oyen is the fourth head coach in the program’s history. She succeeds former head coach Dan Tobias.

Tobias resigned on Oct. 12 due to personal reasons, five days after former player Leila Amini said the program had been deteriorating over the last few years. Oyen will attempt to bring success to a program from which the previous three head coaches have resigned.

Oyen was an assistant under Tobias for eight years at UA (2002-2009) and two at Washington State (2001-2002).

Oyen played collegiate soccer at Montana, where she was a starting midfielder. She also played for two years with the Miami Gliders of the United Soccer League Southeastern Division.

Players were told to meet at McKale Center for a team meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday evening, and were surprised with the news that the head coaching decision had already been made.

“No one really knew what to expect because we’d been through a long season. We were surprised but at the same time excited,” said redshirt junior Alex Davis. “It’ll be good for the program because it’ll be a smooth transition since they already know us.

“I had no idea that they would make the decision this week,” she added. “We thought that maybe it would be a couple weeks.”

According to Davis, Oyen’s fellow co-interim head coach from the second half of the year, John Galas, will return as her assistant.

Still LMAO with your comment about Blues and Slammers.

The next few years will be hard for the Blues and Slammers.
Do not see much talent in 3-4 years.
And everybody knows that the Slammers like to buy girls ,into their rosters.
But, the PARENTS and coaches already know the Slammers sales pitch-- NOT working anymore.

I was very surprised that YOU did not mention Arsenal.
They are beginning to make a move as THE CLUB.

Confused and wrong.
The team finished SECOND in premier.
Way head of Slammers.
(I do like Blues in this age group ONLY. Slammers..LMAO. Surf- Yes, good teams.)

Irvine had to PURCHASE those teams because of NIKE.
Without premier teams, NIKE goes away and is NO LONGER associated with Irvine.
Irvine did not want to loose that PAYCHECK from NIKE.

Note:
Because the Infinity teams moved to Irvine, (more than seven players from the Infinity team are on the Irvine roster.).
Then, Coast soccer-Cal South allows the moving team ...to keep its status ( (ie., Premier).
Very common.
Sounds like your facts are not well understood.

PS- I do agree that Irvine is a THRID TIER CLUB.
If it was not for Solar's two teams...this club would be well BELOW Average.
This club has been going down for YEARS.
The focus is on Solar and his teams/players.
Personnally, I would of NOT moved the tesms to Irvine.

I will expect to SEE LISA this weekend, in S. Cal.
Steve's teams are playinng in the Oak Polo grounds, (local CSL tournament.: Semi's and championship games)

Happy

I'm happy for the girls. This is a good move to keep the program together for the short term and allow the long-term development to begin to take place. Not to mention, hiring a female coach is very admirable. More women like Lisa need to be given these opportunities. I applaud the ADs for making this move and not giving up on the girls in the program currently.

Ummm the reason Irvine "Bought" the infinity team was because all of the girl's side left Ebert for much the same reasons 9 starters quit AZ. Ebert doesn't like girls soccer programs. Never has never will. When they left Irvine, Irvine Strikers no longer had an erstwhile girls side and this put a major dent in Ebert's pocketbook. Had to do something to pay the rent so went out and recruited second rate girl teams and coaches and used his connections with Coast Soccer to get them in Premier. Looks like YOU are the one who doesn't know what you are talking about. As for these girls that WOULD come to AZ, mildly interesting but Blues, Slammers and Surf are where the real talent is and none of them will touch AZ with a 20 foot pole as long as anything related to Tobias remains. Sorry Charlie....Only the BEST tuna become Starkist..... :)

Some more about Steve:

(for assist coach at UofA)

I believe he had a premier team two years ago. At Infinity.
This is where we were introduced.

He has a premier team in GU16. (going to be GU17)
Finished 2nd but, should of WON IT.
Nice group of recruits.
I believe this team was the Infinity team.
(Irvine was able to "buy" the Infinity team into their club.)

More postives in recruiting.
Steve also has a GU15 gold team. (Going to be GU16 premier)
Again, Irvine "paid" for this team (transfers from Infinity)
More top players.

Going to be GU15:
Steve knows all the TOP players.
And he has coached these players from a YOUTH age.
Parents know Steve and MOST will follow QUICKLY.

Get better ......Get better recruits.

With respect to Steve,

I am advoacting that Lisa make this hire.
He is one of the new-up& comers.
And he can recruit.

He will be a good assist coach.

If YOU are involved in the National soccer scene.

Then, YOU read my posts about replacing Tobias ;since, LAST YEAR.
The conerns did reach Jim L. and he issued a comment of support.
Again, it is a reflection of the poor internal UofA information and communication.

But, when NINE players transfer out.
HELLO...........major problems.

The only reason JIM L. did not clean house?

I have spoken to LIsa in the past. Nice lady.
And several TOP100 players, GU15, were planning to do the soccer camp.
(all premier players, goes without saying: from S.Cal).

Time to MOVE on RECRUITING...

If Lisa can offer , at least FOUR of these premier players scholie's,,,,,,,,,,,
The ones that I like are : Betty (Top 15 defender ,with size, speed, vision and socccer IQ)
the Nat's (nice big forward with speed....Talk to Jimmie)
The Sam (strong,fast forward; lefty....)
Bianca (top mid, defender, size and speed)
Laura G. (from the Slammers is another, slammers)
Daniel G. (rich soccer family)

Most of the top players know each other.

When should these players VISIT the UofA.
VERY SOON.
NOTE-- These players visit ARIZONA on a yearly basis.
YOU can check them out in the Tournament.
The Soreno tournament.

Get to them early.....

I'm FUSED.....Really.

YOU do not know STEVE.

Because YOU are NOT involved with S.Cal soccer.

IF you read my other comment, it discussed Irvine.
Solar can bring in the top recruits. Trust me.
And THEY WILL COME!

Note:
Jim L. hire was a LAZY one and rathe uneducated.
He and his advisor really have no comprehension of soccer.
Lisa was given a GOLDN opportunity.
A PAC10 coaching positon, with no HC experience.

Lisa....YOU should already know who Steve is.
Someone from your Tucson Club(s) is a friend of Solar.

Bring him or YOU will fail rather quickly.

One year is what you have.
One shot to make a name for yourself.

JessieWildcat....Regarding your candidate re: "Steve", now that I look at it, Infinity doesn't have ANY girls teams in CSL Premier. What makes you think someone with those fab credentials is going to be able to compete at a PAC10 level and be successful? He can't even put together a team at club level to compete on a club Premier league..... I'm confused.
Smarter than Livengood
Sun Nov 15 2009 09:21
Hey Livengood. You have just shown the entire NCAA how much you DON'T care about this program. By hiring Oyen you've just sealed the fate of UA soccer. You've hired a NO NAME, unproven desciple of Tobias to come into and run a program that Tobias single handedly destroyed. If the team ever had a chance for recovery, it just had a relapse. The cause of it is that you are too lazy and too cheap to hire a quality coach with the technical and personal skills to turn things around. Congratulations! You have proven that you are totally incompetent as an AD. As a coach of any sport, unless my player had NO OTHER OPTION, there is no way I would steer him or her anywhere near UA athletics for ANY sport. What you SHOULD have done is cleaned house! You are about to learn that there aren't any easy ways to fix big problems. UA soccer will be a cellar dweller for the next 4 years.

This should be the dagger in UofA women's soccer's back. Oyen is no different than Dan. She never had the courage to stand up for the girls over the past 8 years so why is she going to start now? Weak, unable to make a leadership decision. Girls on the team should do like Jenny said when she told Gump to: "Run Forest! Run!" Go see Rocky and Livengood and get your releases before Spring Soccer. You've all been "training" since July for this year and now you have to start training next week for next year. The clue here is that Oyen still doesn't realize that the team needs a break after a tumultuous year like this. These kids need time away from the sport to bond and reflect. They will go into Spring soccer, end in May then no doubt will have to report for "unofficial training" (mandatory) again in July. Lisa, if you're reading this (and we all know you are) you're already proving that you are a Dan in a skirt. You know no other way to coach than what he showed you and you are still not considering the girls' needs. Jessie Wildcat...What has Steve Solar ever done at Infinity? Don't see his name on any top ranked teams in CSL Premier. There are much better candidates out there. Matt Potter (formerly a very successful Arizona Club coach or Chris from Az Rush now assisting at UCSB) are far better candidates with credentials. Obfiously Livengood.... you're still a schmuck!

10 years under Tobias...where do you think she learned her coaching? Are we really expecting anything different? This would have never happened in Men's sports. This is a disgrace... The only players happy about this are those who are her "favorites", and /or "friends" off the soccer field.
boonies
Fri Nov 13 2009 22:57
Watch her re-hire Tobias
2 tickets!
Fri Nov 13 2009 16:22
hey Vincent how bout a follow up with ex coach Tobias..Lets see if Spring Valley hires him, heard they were in the market for a coach....

OH YEAH...ITS A HIGH SCHOOL IN NEVADA

It seems Jim doesn't care about the soccer program by making Lisa head coach. Think about it. She had the title co-head coach under Dan, where else would she have been given a position as head coach? Nowhere. Jim definitely made this decision for $$$ reasons. And why pick a coach so quickly? It was the easy way out! The best coaches are in the NCAA tournament! At least 1 of those coaches would have considered taking this position. They settled. They needed to start over and clear out ALL the coaches. I'm disappointed for the program. But I guess you can't do any worse than coming in 10th place in the Pac-10! It's going to be another rough couple of years.

Vincent,

Will you have a follow up article with Lisa Oyen?
I hope so.

Lisa's biggest decision is the hiring of assistant coach.
Solar from Irvine would be a strong recommendation.
Can she make it happen quickly?

Your name
Fri Nov 13 2009 09:44
Lisa has been give a huge ,huge opportunity.
Jim didn't realize that the NCAA tournament has started today.
And all the TOP50 Head Coaches are in this tournament.

Did Jim just look at $$ and made the decision.

Like I said, Solar would be a good addition to the staff.
If Lisa acts as quickly as Jim did....then, SS would be a good addition.

Bear Down.

UofA Soccer Coach- Lisa.

You need a very good assistant coach.
One TOP coach to consider is Steve.
He has coached numerous premier teams in S.Cal. He has nationally ranked teams, from Irvine.

Steve would be a great addition from a coaching perspective ;but more importantly, RECRUITING the riches soccer talent of S. Cal.

Note:
Steve S. in known by Tucson club coach...which came from Long Beach/Infinity club.
