The University of Arizona gymnastics team brought home second place after scoring a 195.825 in the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad meet in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. on Friday, Jan. 10. After week one of regular season competition, the Gymcats are ranked No. 14 in the nation.
No. 13 University of Michigan took the number one spot, scoring a 195.925, Clemson University came in third with a 195.350, and No. 8 North Carolina State University followed with a 195.00.
Floor exercise
The GymCats started strong on the mat scoring a 48.500. Emma Strom scored a 9.825 and Emily Mueller put up a 9.80 and the GymCats were fourth after the first rotation.
Vault
The GymCats soared into the second rotation of the night, finishing with a 49.025. Sophie Derr delivered with a career-high of 9.80. Seniors Elizabeth LaRusso and Alysen Fears matched Derr’s momentum, posting 9.85s. The GymCats would get first in vaults, moving up to second place after the second rotation.
Uneven bars
Arizona earned a 49.075 for uneven bars; this score proved crucial for the GymCats to stay in second after the third rotation. Mueller set the pace with a 9.825 and Elena Deets scored a 9.850 with a strong bar routine. Fears ended the rotation with a bang on the bars scoring a 9.90, tying her season record and anchoring the team’s performance.
Balance beam
The GymCats ended the meet with a 49.225 on beam, narrowly losing first place to Michigan by 0.1. Gianna Lenczner scored a 9.850 to tie her career high. Deets and Abigayle Martin scored a 9.90. Posting this score meant that Martin tied her career high on beam for the second time this season.

Arizona will be bringing the competition to McKale Center for their first home meet of the season against the Air Force on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in McKale Center. This meet also lands on Arizona gymnastics’ Military & First Responders Appreciation Night.
