The University of Arizona women’s golf team is bringing home the Big 12 Championship title after its first-ever appearance in the tournament. Arizona competed at Houston Oaks Country Club in Hockley, Texas, prevailing with a score of 20 through a three-way playoff game against Oklahoma State University and ASU. Guided by first-year head coach Giovana Maymon, who was hired last June, the Wildcats beat the Sun Devils by 1 stroke and Oregon State University by 2.
Arizona captured the program’s first conference title since 2015, now shifting focus towards competing in the NCAA Championships for its third national title (1996, 2000 and 2018).
Nena Wongthanavimok showcased her skills in the final round with an even-par 71, securing her the runner-up position in the standings. After completing a solid round of 72, Charlotte Back tied for 10th place at 5-over. Additionally, Back was a part of the all-tournament team along with Wongthanavimok.
Senior Carolina Melgrati carded a 6-over par, landing her in a five-way tie for 14th place. Junior Julia Misemer delivered a round of 74, finishing inside the top-25. Senior Lilas Pinthier from Paris, France, wrapped up the match at 16-over par, placing in a tie for 47th.
Collectively, the Wildcats earned 39 birdies, the second most of any team, following Oklahoma State with 45. Arizona continued its success on the course, leading in par-4 and par-5 scoring averages with 4.16 and 4.87, respectively. Melgrati and Wongthanavimok finished inside the top 10 for par-4 scoring average.
With the victory, Arizona receives the Big 12 automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals in Lubbock, Texas, happening from May 5-7.
